August 10, 1967: Nothing

Diary entry for August 10, 1967:
Nothing special today.

Since this was another one of those days when Mom had nothing to report, I'll let you know about a couple of articles from the Los Angeles Times on that day:

First, the front page headline:
TOUGH RIOT CURBS SOUGHT IN SENATE
GOP-Dixie Group Asks Quick Action
"Picking up where House counterparts left off, a Republican-Southern Democratic coalition in the Senate spearheaded a drive Wednesday for quick action on tough new laws to curb city rioting."
"He (Senate Minority Leader Everett Dirksen (R-IL) avoided details, but said he thinks that when the measure comes out of the Senate Judiciary Committee it will provide for "strict, sharp enforcement" of police powers in civil disturbances of the type that have rocked the country this summer."

There was a lot of rioting going on in large cities around the country that summer, such that the US Congress was considering legislation to define (and probably expand) police powers in order to restore a little law and order. So maybe my parents had a good reason to be a little concerned about that march through town on Sunday.

The second article was about who various members of the Republican party wanted to see run for President in 1968. There were some who wanted former Vice President Richard Nixon and some who wanted the governor of California at the time, a former actor by the name of Ronald Reagan. Richard Nixon won the Republican nomination (over Mitt Romney's father) and, as most of you know, went on to win the presidential election in 1968. Ronald Reagan, on the other hand, went back into acting after serving two terms as Governor of California.
